Tell us roughly what you have in mind and whereabouts in the city you are. We come and look, we test the ground where rock is likely, and you get a written price with the products named — before anyone picks up a tool.
Four Things Worth Mentioning When You Call
You do not need measurements and you certainly do not need a plan. But if you happen to know any of these, say so, because they are what we would otherwise be guessing at: roughly how far the back door sits above the ground, whether a truck can get to the back of the property, whether there is concrete or an old structure that has to be dealt with, and whether anyone nearby has hit rock digging a post or a pool.
It also helps to know what the space is actually for and at what time of day you use it. A patio used at lunchtime and a patio used at six in the evening need different shade, and that is a design decision rather than a budget one. We size a deck from what happens on it, so the use tells us more than a square-footage target would.
What Happens After That
Someone comes out and looks, and the visit costs nothing and commits you to nothing. Where the ground is in doubt we put a test hole down at the post positions on that visit, so the number you get afterwards is a price rather than an estimate.
You then get it in writing: structure and surface on separate lines, products named so you can look them up, what the city and any association require for your address and who submits it, and the dates. If we think the smaller job is the right one — a resurface rather than a rebuild, a pergola rather than a roof, a clean and re-coat rather than a strip — the quote will say so, because that is the only version of this advice that is worth anything.
